Clinical effect of Omeprazole on peptic ulcer







Abstract
The study objective was to assess the ulcer healing effects of the proton pump inhibitor, omeprazole, given in a dose of 20mg once daily.
We reviewed 20 cases of peptic ulcer(17 cases of duodenal ulcer, 3 cases of gastric ulcer) proven endoscopically and treated by omeprazole.
The results were follows
1. The healing rate of the duodenal ulcer was 88.2% after 2 weeks treatment and 100% after 4 weeks treatment. Gastric ulcer was 66.7%, 100% after 4 weeks and 8 weeks¢¥ treatment.
2. For the subjective symptoms, epigastric pain 18 cases(90%), nausea 8 cases(40%), heartburn 6 cases (30%), melena and vomiting were noticed. During treatment of omeprazole these symptoms were completely relieved.
3. There were not developed any symptoms, signs and laboratory abnormality(CBC, urinalysis, -liver function test) suggesting side effect of drugs.
In conclusion, omeprazole was considered an effective and safe drug in the treatment of peptic ulcer diseases.
